Glossary Item Box
The surviving grandparent uses the GSTT Exemption to pass additional assets to the skipped generation – the grandchildren. Federal estate taxes are paid from the balance of the estate with any remaining balance going to the children – the next generation. Passing the remaining balance to the children, and not the grandchildren, avoids the Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax.
